Tonight’s player of the night honour goes to Spruce Grove Saints forward: Cam Mitchell.
Mitchell, a player who hasn’t been much of a goalscorer this season, set the tone for the Saints offense early in the first period with two quick goals.
The rookie’s first came off a face-off draw right around the seven-minute mark. The puck was shuffled back towards the Oil Barons goal and Mitchell was the first to jump on the loose puck. Without hesitation, Mitchell shot the puck through Eric Szubor in the Fort McMurray goal for his fourth of the season, to tie the game up at 1-1.
Mitchell’s second of the night came just 22 seconds later. He turned a soft pass from Liam Freeborn into something special using a his speed and then sniped one on the glove side of Szubor.
The Saints winger was also awarded the Viterra Star of the Game. His point total on the season now sits 11 (5G, 6A) and has two game-winning goals to his name.
Spruce Grove came out of this matchup 7-2 winners over the Oil Barons. They now sit only two points back of first in the North Division and have winning records over both Whitecourt and Fort McMurray.
