Crusaders 3 – 6 Bandits
The Crusaders were welcoming the Bandits to the Sherwood Park Arena for the first time this season. The previous meeting between the two teams ended up with the Bandits coming out 9-1 winners.
In this matchup, Sherwood Park were looking to bounce back from a loss to the Wolverines the night before; whilst the Bandits were wanting to extended their win streak to two games.
Here’s how it went:
The Crusaders came out to a flying start, just 31 seconds into the hockey game Merritt Oszytko set up Ty Readman for a beautiful goal. Garrett Clegg would pick up the second assist and the Crusaders are out to an early 1-0 lead.
The Crusaders didn’t stop there.
Chase Anderson would lay a big hit in the neutral zone. The hit seemed to set the tone for the game, as after almost every whistle in the first period, there were players exchanging words and getting into it.
Sherwood Park would continue their great start, Tyler Pang would get a tipped pass from the point, and the puck found it’s way to him at the bottom of the left circle. Pang would score a beautiful goal, as he shot the puck short side to beat Mitchel Benson to make it a 2-0 lead for the Crusaders. (Goal 6:26)
The lead didn’t last for long though as the Bandits would respond. Just two minutes after the Tyler Pang goal. Cale List shot the puck from the point, which went off goalie Brandon Vogel’s pad and fell right to Orca Wiesblatt for the easy tap in.
Only a few minutes after, Tyler Carangelo got his team back into the game with the tying goal. However, after realizing the shot, Ben McLeod finished his check which resulted in Carangelo being seriously hurt on the ice. After a 15 to 20 minute delay, the Bandits forward was taken to the hospital by paramedic. We wish him a very speedy recovery.
Also, following the hit Ben McLeod dropped the gloves with Bandits assist master Nic Hamre: both left he game.
Once the game got back underway, Ty Readman scored immediately on a breakaway to give the Crusaders the lead once again.
But of course… that lead didn’t last long at all.
Just 25 seconds later, Cale List went end-to-end to get his team right back in it.
3-3 to end the first.
It seemed that Brooks came out looking like a different team in the second.
They dominated possession and scored an early goal 3:00 minutes in. Matt Cassidy scored for the Bandits on a nice pass from Nolan Thompson to make it 4-3 Brooks.
The Crusaders had one good chance which came from a nice saucer pass from Ty Readman to Aiden Yakimchuk at the top of the blue line, but Yakimchuk rang it off the post.
4-3 Bandits going into the second intermission.
The Bandits came out in the third period and dominated the frame.
3:10 into the third period, Bandits goalie Mitchel Benson received a 2:00-minute delay of game penalty. This should’ve been a great opportunity for the Crusaders to tie it up. However, the Bandits took advantage of poor power play and grabbed themselves a shorthanded goal and a two goal lead.
Late in the third period, the Crusaders would concede an empty-netter with 1:20 left to play, courtesy of Matt Cassidy which sealed the deal for the Crusaders.
- They got off to a hot start scoring two early goals. It’s to bad they couldn’t build off that but it is what it is.
- The first line of Readman-Clegg-Oszytko was solid tonight and made plenty of opportunities for themselves. Very fun to watch
- Did a good job at limiting shots, only allowing 28 shots on goal
- Penalty kill was 100% on the night
- The power play was awful. They went 0/5 on the power play tonight. If they want to get back to winning ways that will have to improve.
- The team in the second and third were a completely different than we saw in the first period. They did not come out and play how they should’ve.
- They may of only allowed 28 shots but they still allowed 6 goals. Not good enough.
