Toronto has almost 25 million in cap space and is determined to make the money work for Tavares even with new contracts due to Auston Matthews and Mitch Marner who will are pending RFA’s and Jake Gardiner who is a UFA after next season. This means the Leafs are going have to find a way to part with either Zaitsev, Kadri or both by next summer.
Why it could work:
The Leafs have a strong goaltender in Frederik Andersen, a good young core; Nylander, Matthews, Marner, Rielly, Gardiner and also veterans like; Marleau, Kadri and Martin. Throw Tavares into the mix, and that’s a team that is ready for Stanley Cup contention.
Why it might not work:
Rumours have swirled about a possible one year deal to win now, but that leaves a lot of uncertainty for Tavares who will be 28 to start the season. Tavares to sign anywhere (other than the Islanders) would want the maximum seven years that he can ask for. While he would have a chance to win, I don’t think Toronto can ultimately offer him the money or term that other teams can and for what should be his richest NHL contract ever, that’s a deal breaker.
