Boston currently has about 12 million in cap space to play with and can be 10% over during the summer to facilitate trades and make the cap work before the season. If Boston can sign Tavares, Torey Krug is likely the first man out in favour of a more inexpensive option on defence. There is also the question of David Krejci who makes 7.25 million for the next three seasons and also plays centre. Can the Bruins find a trade partner for Krejci and on top of that one that he would accept (has an NMC that requires him to submit a trade list of 50% of teams in the NHL in 2019-20)
Why it could work:
One of the more under-rated options IMO for Tavares. Tavares, in New York, has lacked defence and goaltending for years, those are two things the Bruins have. Boston would give Tavares a chance to win now and down the road with multiple prospects coming through the pipeline for the Bruins. With other superstars like Bergeron, Pasternak, and Marchand the spotlight would not be solely on Tavares, one thing he’s enjoyed while playing for the Islanders.
Why it might not work:
Boston is a bigger market than New York, and that pressure might be too much for Tavares, the Bruins pitch to Tavares should be interesting because the money likely won’t be. A lot of dollars tied up into star players already and a lot of expiring contracts over the next few years means Boston probably comes 1.5-2.5 million less per season than the top offer.
