The Montreal Canadiens
The Habs have over 18 million in cap space and the equivalent of that tied up into 30-year-old goaltender Carey Price and 32-year-old defensemen Shea Weber. Not many expiring contracts means plenty of room to play in Montreal.
Why it could work:
Montreal needs a centre like I need to know how Game of Thrones ends. Hopefully, they don’t have to wait as long as I do. John Tavares is the #1 centre the Habs have been looking for since Saku Koivu. Jonathan Drouin, while skilled, has yet proved he can play centre and if Philip Danault is your plan for #1 C, you might as well throw in the towel now. Tavares immediately makes Montreal a threat in the East and becomes the face of the franchise.
Why it might not work:
If Tavares signs with Montreal he becomes their number one centre, but also their only real centre. GM Marc Bergevin would need to add another scoring winger and likely an upgrade to the top 4 D before Tavares would be willing to sign. Good news for Montreal is they can offer him the money that he’s after in free agency, unlike some teams. With not enough overall talent surrounding the team, Tavares likely takes his talents elsewhere.
