The Leafs and Blue Jackets were both on the brink of elimination tonight.
Toronto was coming off a big 4-3 win on Friday night which they almost squander. And the Blue Jackets were looking to get back on track after losing their last three.
Here’s how it went:
Boston Bruins 1 – 3 Toronto Maple Leafs
(Series tied at 3-3)
The Maple Leafs stay alive after an emotional victory at Air Canada Centre.
Following a scoreless first period, the Bruins were the first to get on the board early in the second when Jake DeBrusk scored his third of the postseason. The rookie sniped the puck through the crowd in front of Frederick Anderson from the top of the face-off circle to make it 1-0.
Besides the one goal against, Anderson was solid tonight in this must-win game for the Leafs. The Danish netminder stopped 32 of the 33 shots he faced with maybe his biggest coming with 10 minutes to play when he denied Sean Kuraly from point blank.
At that point, the Leafs were up 2-1 after both William Nylander and Mitch Marner got their names on the box score. The win was then cemented when Tomas Plekanec slotted the puck into an empty-net.
The Leafs and Bruins will now face-off in a game seven this Wednesday.
Washington Capitals 6 – 3 Columbus Blue Jackets
(Capitals win series 4-2)
Despite finding themselves down 2-0 in the series, the Capitals clawed their way back to win four straight games and move onto the second round to face-off against the Pittsburgh Penguins.
Alexander Ovechkin led the way this evening scoring two goals, including his 50th career playoff goal.
Between the pipes, Braden Holtby continued to prove the organization that they were wrong to bench him to start the series. He made 35 saves while on route to his fourth straight playoff victory.
The rest of the scoring for the Caps came from Devante Smith-Pelly, Dmitry Orlov, Chandler Stephenson (both pick up first career playoff goal), and Lars Eller.
As for the Blue Jackets, Nick Foligno scored two in a solid captains performance. And Pierre Luc-Dubois scored his second of the playoffs.
