Crusaders 2017/18 Ups and Down

It was a successful year for the Sherwood Park Crusaders. With them being one of the most inexperienced teams in the AJHL, the expectations for this team were unclear.

They wrapped up their 60 game regular season with a 27-31-2 record and finished fifth in the North Division. They battled it out with the Grande Prairie Storm for first-round home ice advantage right until the last game of the season.

Their season was over after were eliminated by the Storm in the first round of the playoffs. It was a highly competitive series which really could’ve fallen either way. Unfortunately for Sherwood Park, a poor Game Five showing resulted in the Storm eliminating them in after a 6-1 spanking.

There were plenty of positives from the year, but also many negatives. Let’s a take a look at a few of those from both sides.

Cru in Review: 10 Game Mark

written by Liam Horrobin

We’ve reached the 10 game mark of the Crusaders 39th season. Right now, they sit in fifth in the AJHL North Division with a record of 5-4-1… not bad for a team that has 15 rookies occupying their roster.

Cru Wrap: March 1st vs Drayton Valley

FINAL SCORE: Sherwood Park Crusaders 5 Drayton Valley Thunder 6 (SO)

The Crusaders came out extremely sloppy with zero energy to start the game. As a consequence, the Cru conceded two goals within the first five minutes. The first came from a pass from behind the net to Anzai in front and the second was a tipped in goal courtesy of McPeak. Both of the goals were well deserved for the Valley. Sherwood Park did eventually pick up their game on the powerplay. A slap shot from Reagan bounced off the glass back in front to Younghans who made a sweet pass to Readman to bring the Cru within one. After that, you could see the energy level rise slightly for the Crusaders, both Stafford and Rebelato forced Joe McLeod into making a couple of good stops. Drayton Valley did add another to their total with a nice tic-tac-toe play towards the end of the period. Final score at the end of one was 3-1 to the Thunder.
