Another quiet summer week in the AJHL resulted in a commitment a signing and a trade.
The Canucks named a captain, Grande Prairie signed a forward, the Crusaders made a trade with the Humboldt Broncos, and Okotoks lost a player to the college ranks.
Here’s what went on:
The Calgary Canucks named a captain for the 2018-19 season on Monday morning.
Cooper Johnson the 98-born forward is only the fourth captain in team history, and this will be his second season with the Canucks. Johnson came out of the AMHL with the Calgary Buffaloes before playing two games with the Brooks Bandits before landing with the Camrose Kodiaks. On August 19, 2017, the Kodiaks traded Johnson to the Canucks.
The 20-year forward played in 55 games for the Canucks last season scoring 22 points (12G-10A) and has a career total of 52 points (23G-29A). Johnson takes over as captain from Kyler Newman.
Grande Prairie Storm
Also on Monday, the Grande Prairie Storm signed 98-born winger Vincent Milot-Ouellet.
The veteran winger was originally drafted by the Gatineau Olympiques of the QMHL where he spent three seasons before making the trip out west to the AJHL.
Milot-Ouellet played in a total of 165 games in the Q where he totalled 65 points (25G-40A) through the three years he spent there. With forwards Dallas Comeau, Edouard Michaud and Justin Bernier all departing via graduation the Storm look for Milot-Ouellet to help reproduce some of that lost production.
As previously mentioned, the Storm lost Edouard Michaud to graduation. On Thursday Michaud committed to play with the University of Moncton Blue Eagles.
Through 52 games Michaud had an outstanding season amassing 73 points (39G-34A) and had an even better playoff. In five games in the first round against Sherwood Park, Michaud added another seven goals to already impressive tally on the year.
Sherwood Park Crusaders
On Friday the Sherwood Park Crusaders made a trade with the Humboldt Broncos of SJHL. The Cru acquired 98-born forward Ethan Kopyczyn in exchange for 00-born defenceman Payton McIssac.
Kopycyzn, a Sherwood Park product, played in 56 games in the AJHL with the Calgary Mustangs where he totalled 21 points (8G-13A) before landing with the Melville Millionaires last year. In the SJHL last season Kopycyzn played in 57 games amassing 30 points (7G-23A).
On June 12, 2018, he was traded to Humboldt before being shipped to Sherwood Park a month later.
McIsaac who turns 18 on Boxing Day, played in 50 games for the Crusaders totalling 11 points (2G-9A) in that time.
Okotoks lost a defenseman this week with Kylor Wall committing to Nipissing University. Wall was sent over in a trade with the Calgary Mustangs in August of 2017.
In 46 games with the Oilers Wall totalled 33 points (13G-20A) last season. Before that, Wall spent three seasons with the Mustangs.
